FACTORYVILLE - As a new fundraiser this year, the Factoryville Fire Company sold Thanksgiving pies.
The project was the idea of fire company secretary Kathy Smith and treasurer Kim Lengel.
Smith explained that a few weeks ago, she and Lengel were looking for a different way to raise money for the fire company, when the concept of a pie sale just came to them.
"We wanted to do something different, and both of us have a love for baking," she said.
The two decided to take on the project by themselves, at least for the first time. They had no idea what type of response they would get.
"Surprisingly it's taking off," Smith said.
She noted that they had 98 orders for pies.
"We were hoping, but we weren't sure it would go. We're very pleased," Smith commented.
In order for the pies to be fresh, Smith said she and Lengel planned to wait until the last possible moment to do the baking. They expected to start work yesterday afternoon, so the pies would be ready for pick-up today. They timed the process so people ordering pies could pick them up at the same time the fire company was hosting its annual pre-Thanksgiving pizza and wing sale.
Smith explained that she and Lengel are using all fresh ingredients. For example, there won't be any canned pie filling - they purchased Northern Spy apples which will be cut up and cooked, she said.
"Everything is going to be hand-made," she said.
Smith said she and Lengel at first planned to pay for the ingredients out of their own pockets, and get reimbursed from the fire company after the sale was done. With so many orders, however, they were able to get some money from the fire company to buy ingredients, with all profits going back to the company.
